Apply for passport online

Bitten by the travelling bug and yet wary of a long queue to apply for a passport. Sounds familiar and frustrating? But wait a bit—you can actually apply for passport online, right from the cosiest corner of your home. Yes, it has become that easy.

Passport application online requires just a few simple steps. You only go offline to approach a Passport Seva Kendra (PSK) near your home to process the application. Do as instructed on the Passport Seva portal and you are good to go.

Start your passport application online by logging in:

  • Select the ‘Apply’ option that pops up on the Passport Seva home screen
  • If you are already a registered applicant, click on ‘Existing user? Login’
  • Log in with your user ID and password
  • A new applicant should create an account first by selecting the ‘New user? Register now’ option
  • Fill in your details on the ‘User registration’ page
  • Select the nearest passport office
  • Type in your name, date of birth, and email ID
  • Decide on a login ID and settle on a password
  • Furnish with a hint question and an answer
  • Key in the displayed code
  • Click on ‘Register’ displayed on the bottom-right corner of the page
  • Choose your application type
  • Once logged in, you can either opt for:
  • A fresh passport or a reissue of your passport
  • A diplomatic passport or an official passport
  • Police clearance certificate (PCC)
  • Identity certificate
  • Hit on the ‘Fresh passport or passport reissue’ option on the ‘Applicant Home’ page to fill out your application form

  • Fill out your application
  • Hit on the appropriate link that would direct you to the ‘Passport type’ page
  • Take your pick: A fresh passport or a reissue of your passport
  • Choose either of the two: A normal passport or a Tatkaal passport
  • Select from the booklet options provided to you: A booklet of 36 pages or 60 pages
  • Select the validity of your passport: 10 years/up to 18 years of age/not applicable.

 In case you are above 18 years, select ‘not applicable’. If the applicant’s age is between 15 and 18 years, select ‘up to 18 years’ or ‘10 years’

  • Click on the ‘next’ button to proceed to the following page
  • Type in the details asked for: passport type, details of the applicant, family details, current address, current address 1, current address 2, emergency contact, references, previous passport, other details, declaration, etc.
  • Submit the form

You can fill out your application form offline as well. All you need to do is download the appropriate e-form, punch in your particulars offline, and then upload it on the website.

  • Schedule your meeting, pay for it, and book your appointment
  • Visit the applicant home page and select ‘View saved or submitted applicants’
  • Your details like the application reference number (ARN), file number, name, appointment date, submission number, etc., will pop up
  • You are required to choose the ARN of the filled-in form
  • Select ‘Pay and schedule’ from various other options
  • Choose your mode of payment:
  • Online payment: You can pay using the SBI Internet banking facility or any debit or credit card (SBI or any other bank)
  • Offline payment: Pay cash at any SBI branch or the PSK concerned

Only the balance amount in case of a Tatkaal passport should be paid physically at a PSK. (More on fees and charges)

  • In case you make the payment online, you are immediately directed to ‘Book the passport appointment’
  • In case of cash payment:
  • Collect your challan (valid for 85 days after its generation). After three hours of its generation, pay the required amount in cash at any SBI branch
  • The bank will return a copy of your challan for your reference
  • The bank will verify your ARN printed on the challan after two days of payment
  • Track your application status online. You can also get updated via mail
  • You can schedule your meeting after a successful payment (either online or offline). You will see all available appointment dates at the PSK under your nearest Regional Passport Office (RPO). Here you can also view your ARN.
  • Choose your nearest PSK
  • Punch in the code displayed on the screen and select the ‘Next’ button
  • Select an appointment quota: ‘Normal appointment quota’ for regular passport applicants and ‘Tatkaal appointment quota’ for Tatkaal passport applicants.
  • Select ‘Pay and book the appointment’. The page displays details like your ARN, name, reason for application, amount to be paid, date of appointment, phone number, etc.
  • Review the details displayed on the screen and click on the ‘Appointment payment and booking’ icon
  • You will be immediately directed to the payment gateway (SBI Multi Option Payment System [MOPS]). Please note that there will be no refund once the fee is paid.
  • Choose the payment method you are comfortable with: net banking or payment made through a card (keep trying if the payment system fails to work in the first go)
  • Visit the ‘Applicant home page’ and click on ‘Track payment status’ (For applicants with a ‘failed’ transaction, the amount will be refunded within seven days.)
  • The ‘Appointment confirmation and appointment number’ page will pop up once you make a successful payment. Details relating to your appointment like the ARN, name, date of birth, reason for application, appointment quota, selected PSK, passport ID, appointment date and time, etc. will be displayed.
  • Hit on the ‘Print application receipt’ button

  • Print your ARN receipt
  • Once you click on the ‘Print application receipt’ button, the following will be displayed:
  • Details of the applicant including the ARN, application type, name, date of birth, place of birth, type of employment, current address, gender, father’s name, marital status, etc.
  • References provided by the applicant
  • Details of the payment made like the payment transaction ID, total amount to be paid, fee paid, date and time of payment, etc.
  • Details of the appointment including the address and the location of the selected PSK, date and time of the appointment, reporting time, and appointment ID
  • Ensure that the details are all correct
  • Select ‘Print application receipt’
  • Your application receipt will be displayed on the screen. Now, you are done with the application process
  • Click on the icon ‘Printing the application receipt’ and collect your printout
  • Click on the ‘Close’ button to complete the process

Contents of ARN receipt:

Your ARN receipt contains the following details:

  • Applicant details
  • Applicant references
  • Payment details
  • Appointment details
  • Tabular display of the batch (applicants are called according to the batch number)
  • Sequence number (helps in dealing with the appointments)
  • Reporting time
  • Two barcodes (one at the top and the other at the bottom right corner)
  • An instruction at the bottom of the form. Here applicants are asked to carry all the required documents to the PSK on the date of appointment

Things to remember

  • Pay the application fee properly. Payment once made is non-refundable, even if you reschedule or cancel your appointment. In case there is an issue of multiple payments for one application, the extra amount will be refunded by the RPO
  • Carry the applicant receipt/ARN receipt to the PSK
  • Carry all the required documents, self-attested photocopies of them, and a photograph
  • Reach the PSK to receive the token and verify your documents. If you fail to arrive at the PSK before or at the scheduled time, no token will be issued to you
  • Enter the PSK alone. But a family member is allowed to accompany a minor, a senior citizen, an illiterate, or a differently abled applicant (More on minor passports and passports for senior citizens)
  • Do not carry any electronic gadget like a camera
  • Reschedule or cancel your appointment at the soonest in case you fail to keep the appointment
  • Your appointment can be rescheduled only twice within a year
  • A ‘missed or no show’ appointment cannot be rescheduled. In that case, the applicant should book a fresh appointment

Passport application online for diplomatic or official passport

Are you travelling abroad under government protection? Is it an official state business tour? Diplomatic passports are issued to consuls or diplomats appointed offshore on the government’s behalf.

Let us run through the pointers for the online diplomatic passport application procedure:

  • Visit the PSK website
  • Select the ‘Register now’ option and register yourself on the online portal of the PSK
  • Use the ID provided to you to log in to the Passport Seva portal
  • Click on ‘Apply for diplomatic or official passport’
  • Download the application form, fill it out, and then submit. The necessary documents are to be submitted as well
  • Visit the ‘View saved or submitted application’ page
  • Click on the ‘View or print submitted form’ link to collect a print-out of the application form. You need to carry this printed copy while visiting the ‘Consular Passport and Visa Division’
