How to link Aadhaar with PAN?

You PAN card linked to Aadhaar card is mandatory for filing your income tax return. Earlier the deadline to link Aadhaar to PAN was extended from 31 August 2017 to 31 December 2017. It was further extended to 31 March 2018. The final deadline is June 30, 2018, as per The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) directives.

If you do not link your Aadhaar to your PAN, you may not be able to file your taxes and even the returns you have filed may be rejected.

The good news, though, is that if you have mentioned your Aadhaar while filing your taxes in the past, the link would have already been made by the Income Tax Department. So, first, check if your Aadhaar is already linked.

How to check if your Aadhaar is linked to your PAN?

Visit the following link to check if your PAN Card is linked to Aadhaar card: https://portal.incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in/e-Filing/Services/AadhaarPreloginStatus.html. If they are, then you needn’t worry. If they are not, then follow the guide below:


You can get your PAN card Linked to Aadhaar card by following the below mentioned steps:

Step 1:   Go to www.incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in

Step 2:   Log in using your PAN and password

Step 3:   Go to Profile Settings

Step 4:   Select Link Aadhaar

Step 5:   If your Aadhaar and PAN are linked, you will get a message saying so. If it isn’t, you will get a form

Step 6:   Fill up the form and click submit

How to link Aadhaar with PAN Online (if you are not registered for e-filing)?

You can get your PAN card Linked to Aadhaar card online by following the below mentioned steps:

Step 1:   Go to the Income Tax e-filing website: https://portal.incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in/e-Filing/Services/LinkAadhaarHome.html

Step 2:   Enter your PAN, Aadhaar card number, full name as per Aadhaar

Step 3:   Tick the square box if you have a year of birth mentioned on your Aadhaar card

Step 4:   Fill the captcha code and click on link Aadhaar

Step 5:   Your screen will receive a pop-up message: ‘your Aadhaar will be linked with the PAN’

Step 6:   You will receive the OTP on your mobile number. Add the code in the grey box on your screen

Step 7:   You will receive a confirmation message on your mobile number


You can link Aadhaar to PAN through SMS by following the below mentioned steps:

Step 1:   Type SMS in the format: UIDPAN

Step 2:   Send out the message either to 567678 or 56161

Step 3:  You will receive a confirmation message: ‘Aadhaar is linked to your PAN card’

Before linking Aadhaar to PAN, ensure that the details on the two match. You can make changes to your PAN in these simple steps:

Step 1:   Go to (https://www.onlineservices.nsdl.com/paam/endUserRegisterContact.html)

Step 2:   Select ‘Application Type’ and choose ‘Changes/Correction in existing PAN data’

Step 3:   Select ‘Individual’ category and enter your full name, date of birth, email id and mobile number correctly

Step 4:   Enter the captcha code and click on submit

Step 5:   You will receive a confirmation over your email from the NSDL website: ‘Your PAN has been updated’
