What is Aadhaar Card Virtual ID?

Many people are not comfortable giving their Aadhaar numbers out fearing that it may be misused or stolen. The Aadhaar Virtual ID (VID) solves that problem. VID is a temporary 16-digit random number mapped to your Aadhaar generated by the UIDAI. If you don’t want to share your original number, you can use this to authenticate transactions and complete e-know-your-customer (KYC) services.

The VID can only be generated on the UIDAI’s portal, and not on third-party websites. The VID is also safer than providing the Aadhaar number as it is only valid for one day, meaning a new VID will need to be generated each day. This option is only available if your mobile number has been registered with UIDAI as the online services require an OTP, which will be sent to your registered mobile number. If you have not registered your mobile number with your Aadhaar, you can do so online and offline.

How to Generate Aadhaar Virtual ID (VID)?

Keep in mind that the Aadhaar card virtual ID (VID) is only temporary. And while the VID has to be retrieved with the help of Aadhaar number, it does not work vice-versa.

Step 1:   Open the Aadhaar VID site - https://resident.uidai.gov.in/web/resident/vidgeneration

Step 2:   In the space provided, enter your Aadhaar number and security code

Step 3:   Click on ‘Send OTP’

Step 4:   You will receive the OTP on your mobile number, post which you must enter it in the space provided

Step 5:   Select the ‘Retrieve/Generate VID’ option and click on ‘Submit’

Step 6:   You will receive your 16-digit VID on your registered mobile number as well as email address.

Your Virtual ID is accepted for the following services:

Step 1:   Opening a new account in the bank

Step 2:   Applying for subsidies offered by the government

Step 3:   Applying for tatkal passports

Step 4:   Buying new Insurance Policies

Some of the benefits of the vid are as follows:

1. Reduces exposure of your Aadhaar information and as a result prevents misuse

2. A VID is valid only for a day so minimizes risk of fraud

3. Third-party access to your private details and specific information is limited

4. Service providers don’t need to store your Aadhaar details
