How to Lock and Unlock Aadhaar Biometrics Online

Aadhaar is currently the world’s largest biometric ID system and one of the most important documents for proof of residence, as well as identity proof. Though it is not a proof of citizenship and is completely voluntary and not mandatory, the 12-digit number provided by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), is unique to each person. The number is also linked to the resident’s basic biometric as well as demographic information like their photograph, fingerprints and iris scans, which are all stored in a centralised database. Though it is a valid document, Aadhaar is not intended to replace any existing identity cards, and neither does it guarantee rights or benefits of any sorts.

The Aadhaar number is prone to mishandling as well as theft. To avoid all of this, the simple and hassle-free measure is to lock the biometric data stored on the UIDAI servers. It is easy to lock your data online as it can be unlocked, used for verification and be locked again through a simple procedure.
