How to Link Aadhaar Card with Driving License Online
Is it mandatory to link your Aadhar card with your driver’s license? No, it is not. At least, not yet. The Supreme Court has reserved its verdict on the constitutional validity of linking an individual’s Aadhar to his or her driver’s license. Till the court passes its order, it is not compulsory for you to link your Aadhar card to your driving license.
But, if you still wish to link them up, you can do so online if your state’s regional transport office (RTO) offers the service on its website. At the time of writing this, only the Andhra Pradesh RTO offers the facility to link your Aadhar card to your driving license online. Once other states offer the facility, the procedure should not be any different from the following.
STEP ON HOW TO LINK AADHAAR CARD TO DRIVING LICENSE ONLINE
Step 1: Visit Vahan, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways national register, and click on your state. You will be taken to the state RTO website.
Step 2: On the state, RTO website look for the option to ‘Link Aadhaar’ and click on it (the link should be on the home page and prominently displayed. If you can’t find it, then the state RTO probably does not offer online linking).
Step 3: From the drop-down menu, choose license or driving license.
Step 4: Enter your driving license number
Step 5: Click on ‘Submit’ or ‘Get Details’
Step 6: Enter your Aadhaar number
7. Enter your mobile number registered with Aadhaar
Step 8: Click ‘Submit’
If the details of your Aadhar card and driving license match, the linking will be done, and you will receive an SMS on your registered mobile number informing you of the same.
Why is it important to link Aadhaar to driving license?
According to reports, almost one in three driving licenses in India could be fake. Fake driving licenses pose a security and safety threat. Many criminal use fake licenses to commit illegal acts. Besides that, people without proper driving skills could acquire a fake license and pose serious hazards to pedestrians and other motorists on the road. Linking Aadhar to a driving license will reduce the problem of fake driving licenses.
