Management Commentary:

Dinesh Kumar Khara, Chairperson of State Bank of India, said,

  • “While deposit growth is currently lagging behind credit growth, the bank’s substantial excess statutory liquidity ratio (SLR) portfolio is playing a crucial role in supporting credit expansion. In addition, the bank is actively engaging in infrastructure bond issuances and certificates of deposit to enhance its lending resources.
  • Despite an increase in the cost of deposits—rising by 45 basis points year-on-year to 5 per cent for domestic operations and by 76 basis points to 4.30 per cent for foreign offices—the whole-bank net interest margin (NIM) experienced only a modest decline of 11 basis points year-on-year, settling at 3.22 per cent.”
  • He attributed this remarkable progress to a sharp focus on the quality of advances and the enhancement of other income streams. “These are some of the factors that helped us,” Khara emphasised during his quarterly results press meeting.
