How to surrender PAN Card

Every taxpayer in India, be it an individual, a company, a trust or a HUF, must have a PAN card, a unique 10-digit alphanumeric code. Sometimes, however, you may need to surrender your PAN card, and there is a prescribed procedure to do so. Follow our step-by-step guide on how to surrender your PAN card online and offline.

Reasons to surrender PAN card

There are various reasons which make you liable to surrender your PAN card:

1.   If you have more than one PAN allotted to you, you will have to surrender one of them or risk being penalized.

2.   If a PAN holder dies, the deceased’s relatives can surrender the PAN card

3.   If a company or trust is dissolved, its PAN can be surrendered.

How to surrender your PAN card online?

All PAN card holders can use this method to surrender unwanted PANs.

  • Step 1:   Visit the following link for PAN card change request: https://tin.tin.nsdl.com/pan/correctiondsc.html
  • Step 2:   Read the instructions carefully and scroll to the bottom and choose the appropriate entity in the drop-down menu. And click submit to open a change request form.
  • Step 3:   Mention the PAN that you wish to retain in the field provided at the top of the form
  • Step 4:   Mention all other PANs that you wish to surrender in section 14
  • Step 5:   Fill in all the other mandatory and relevant details
  • Step 6:   Submit all the required proof, including copies of surrendered PANs, along with the application.
  • Step 7:   Once you complete the application you will receive a 15-digit acknowledgement number and the filled-up application form.
  • Step 8:   Save and print the application form

    "UAN or Universal Account Number allotted to employees who are eligible for provident fund by the Employee Provident Fund Organization. Unlike your provident fund number, which may change from organization to organization, the UAN remains constant throughout your working life. The UAN is not intended to replace your PF number.     How to link your PAN card with UAN?

    • Step 1:   Go to the EPF members portal and log in with your UAN number and password
    • Step 2:   Under the ‘Manage’ option, click KYC
    • Step 3:   Select PAN option. Enter your PAN details
    • Step 4:   Update your KYC details like bank account number, Aadhaar, passport, ration card, etc. on the same page
    • Step 5:   ‘Save’ the details and upload a copy of the mentioned documents. Submit them
    • Step 6:   Your PAN will get verified automatically if the details match with the records of Income Tax Department
    • Step 7:   Your name will be listed in the ‘member' section on the homepage of https://unifiedportal-mem.epfindia.gov.in/

    UAN has eased off the pressure for EPFO and account holders. It allows the EPFO to track the account holders Provident Fund (PF) and changes in their jobs. When the employee changes job, he/she can link their new PF account with the UAN number. Through UAN number, EPFO receives updated information on account holders.

  • Step 12:   If you have a digital signature, you can use the paperless route. Just check box the DSC option, and submit the required documents.

How can PAN card be surrendered offline?

You can surrender your PAN offline by writing a letter to the Income Tax department. Here’s how you can do it.

  • 1. Write a letter to your Assessing Officer (where you file your income taxes)
  • 2. Include details such as name, date of birth and the PAN you are surrendering
  • 3. Hand over the letter at the income tax office or PAN facilitation centre (find details on this link: https://www.tin-nsdl.com/tin-facilities.html).
  • 4. Your request will take 14 days to get processed


Incase of death of individual holder, the PAN card cancellation process should be initiated by following the below mentioned steps:

1.   A relative of the deceased should write a letter to the Income Tax Department

2.   Include the deceased’s death certificate, details such as PAN number, name and date of birth

3.   The PAN cancellation will happen in 7 days
