Coca-Cola is planning to go public in India with an initial public offering (IPO) of its Indian bottling unit, which is expected to raise around $1 billion and value the company at about $10 billion. This Coca Cola IPO could hit the markets in 2026; however, the other details, including its timing and structure, are yet to be finalised. The company has initiated a few key steps, like early discussions with bankers, which may mean that it is already on track to go public.
In India, Coca-Cola operates through its key bottling arm under the company Hindustan Coca-Cola Beverages Pvt. Ltd. (HCCB). It is part of The Coca-Cola Company’s Bottling Investments Group, which manages its operations, including manufacturing, packaging, sales, and distribution of its beverage portfolio in India. HCCB is the largest bottling partner of The Coca-Cola Company in India, with the responsibility for about 65% of the bottling operations in the country.
The Coca-Cola Company (USA) and the Indian conglomerate Jubilant Bhartia Group own the company. Jubilant Bhartia Group had acquired a 40% stake in Hindustan Coca-Cola Holdings Pvt. Ltd., the parent entity of HCCB, in 2023. Coca-Cola remains the majority stakeholder but is pursuing a strategy to reduce its holding below majority over the next five years, making the Bhartia family the reference and controlling shareholder without being a passive investor.
HCCB has been a leader in the Indian beverage market for quite some years now. It serves over 2 million retail outlets, employs more than 5,200 people, and operates 14 manufacturing plants spread across 12 states and 236 districts. The company manufactures popular aerated drinks such as Coca-Cola, Thums Up, Sprite, Fanta, and Limca. At the same time, it also has fruit juices like Maaza and Minute Maid as a part of its portfolio. It has a diverse distribution network covering over a million outlets nationally. Coca-Cola has managed to serve beverages that match local tastes and preferences with world-class execution standards.
Coca-Cola is reportedly preparing an Upcoming IPO for Hindustan Coca-Cola Beverages, aiming to raise about $1 billion and value the company at around $10 billion. This fits well with Coca-Cola’s broader strategy of handing over its bottling operations to local partners, allowing the company to concentrate more on marketing, brand building, and improving supply chain efficiency, while giving local players a bigger role in operations.
Currently, India’s beverage market has been witnessing rapid growth at 6–8% annually due owing to multiple factors like increase in spending capacity, rise of younger population, and changing lifestyles.
Players like Mukesh Ambani’s Campa Cola have been giving stiff competition by aggressively pushing affordable alternatives. HCCB needs a financial muscle to stay ahead in the game.
Additional capital will help the company to boost its production capacity, invest in new product innovations, and secure its position in the competitive environment.
While this IPO will be a major event for the company, it will bring along interesting questions like:
How will India’s public market respond to one of the largest FMCG IPOs in recent years?
Will the additional investment boost HCCB’s capacity to beat the competition, including emerging players like Campa Cola?
The Bhartia family is expected to have a much larger role in the company’s strategic decision making and long-term growth plans after Coca-Cola lowers its majority stake. Their deep knowledge of the Indian market, consumer habits, and regulatory framework will bring greater agility and localisation to decision-making.
This IPO could be a significant event in India’s capital markets, giving investors a chance to participate in a globally renowned brand that has been serving the Indian consumers for several years now.
This brand reflects a strong collaboration between a global beverage powerhouse and a leading Indian business group. The plan will strengthen this alliance by combining Coca-Cola’s global expertise with local insight, driving faster growth, operational efficiency, and market responsiveness. As this development will be keenly watched by investors, competitors, and consumers, it will be interesting to see if it changes the future of the beverage industry in India.
