NTPC has announced the commercial launch of a 9.9MW Wind Energy Project in Bhuj Gujarat. This plant is said to go commercial live on October 25, 2025 as per reports. NTPC Limited is India’s one of the largest power generating players. The company has been working in the renewable energy sector for quite some years now. The company focuses on wind and solar projects through its subsidiary NTPC Green Energy Limited. Gujarat has a lot of locations with favourable climate for such wind energy projects and it has supportive policies, making it a preferred state for investment in the wind energy sector. NTPC's new 9.9MW wind project there fits well into this bigger renewable strategy.
NTPC intends to achieve 60 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2032, which would make up nearly 45% of its total power generation mix. The goal fits into India’s broader vision of reaching 500 GW of non-fossil fuel-based capacity by 2030. In recent years, NTPC’s renewable portfolio has expanded quickly to approximately 15 GW of installed capacity in 2025 which includes both solar as well as wind projects. This shift aligns with India’s commitments under the Paris Agreement to cut carbon emissions and increase sustainable power generation.
NTPC made a public regulatory filing in October 2025 in which it announced that the commercial operation date (COD) for a 9.9 MW wind project in Gujarat will be October 25, 2025. Key details about the project are as follows:
This new plant shall now generate and supply electricity to the grid, increasing NTPC's renewable energy capacity and also the state’s clean power mix.
Although, it might seem relatively low in scale to produce 9.9 MW energy compared to NTPC’s overall generation capacity, there are several factors to look at:
Addition of Incremental Capacity: This new project shall increase capacity of the renewable energy grid, supporting energy diversification and expansion.
Maintaining Gujarat’s position: Gujarat is blessed with good wind speeds and infrastructure and hence, it has a large share in India’s total wind energy generation. This new project shall help the state remain a leader and contribute more towards India’s larger objectives.
Fulfilment of India’s Targets: The Indian government has ambitious targets for renewable energy which shall require consistent efforts and additions like this by players like NTPC and others.
By mid-2025, Gujarat’s installed wind power capacity had crossed 7,500 MW, according to data from the Central Electricity Authority. This new project will add to the total capacity, which will maintain the state’s position as one of the top wind energy producers in India.
Such projects shall strengthen the company’s renewable portfolio, helping it move closer to its goal of achieving 60 GW of renewable capacity by 2032.
| Metric | Figure |
|---|---|
NTPC Group Total Capacity | 84,049 MW (all energy sources) |
NTPC Green Energy Capacity | ~7,563.58 MW (renewables) |
Latest Wind Project Capacity | 9.9 MW (Bhuj, Gujarat) |
Gujarat Installed Wind Capacity | ~13,800 MW (mid-2025) |
India Total Wind Capacity | ~50 GW (as of May 2025) |
India Wind Capacity added (2024-25) | 4.1 GW |
NTPC Renewable Capacity Target | 60 GW by 2032 |
India Renewable Energy Target | 500 GW by 2030 |
We have seen growth in India’s renewable energy sector in the recent years. In the financial year 2024-2025 itself, India added 4.1 GW of new wind capacity. There are multiple reasons behind this growth viz. new incentives by the Government, reforms by the policy makers, and corporate participation. This took the total capacity of India close to 50 GW. The government intends to auction 10 GW of onshore wind capacity annually from 2023 to 2027.
As this wind project in Gujarat starts commercial operations, it is a considerable contribution to India’s journey of moving towards renewable energy. However, the question now is how quickly such projects can help the country achieve its clean energy goals. The targets set are big and we have been seeing increasing interest from investors. But the results will depend on how consistently India can attract new investments, maintain policy support, and adopt better technology. Industry watchers will be keeping a close eye on how initiatives like this shape the nation’s energy future and strengthen its position in the global shift toward cleaner power.
