What to do if your PAN card is Lost?

The PAN card is mandatory for many financial transactions, be it filing taxes, opening a bank account or buying property. It also serves as proof of address, age and identity.

If your PAN card is lost or stolen, you must get a new one immediately. And there is prescribed process to do so.


The first thing to do when your PAN card is lost is to lodge a complaint at the nearest police station. Get an acknowledgement slip or copy of the FIR.

How To Apply For A Lost PAN Card Offline?

You can apply doe a lost PAN card offline by following the below mentioned steps:

  • Step 1:   Visit the nearest PAN or NSDL facilitation centre where you can request for Form 49A.
  • Step 2:   You must carry a letter addressing the IT department for a new PAN card, identity proof, address proof, a passport size photo, and a copy of the FIR you lodged with the police. Submit these documents along with the form
  • Step 3:   Make sure you fill the form carefully, as any mistake can lead to the cancellation of your PAN card
  • Step 4:   Sign the photo after you have attached it to the document
  • Step 5:   Put the form in an envelope. On the top of it, write ‘Application for PAN change request’ must be written on top of the envelope
  • Step 6:   Attach a DD or cheque for the payment, with the document and submit them to the PAN or NSDL office at the following address:

                      3rd Floor, Sapphire Chambers,
                      Baner Telephone Exchange, Baner,
                      Pune – 411045.

The duplicate PAN will reach the address you have mentioned, in 2-3 weeks.

How To Apply For a Lost PAN Card Online?

  • Step 1:   Visit the online application facility for PAN:
  • Step 2:   From the Application Type drop down select ‘Online application for changes/correction of PAN data’
  • Step 3:   Choose an appropriate option from the Category selection (individual/ company/ firm/ HUF)
  • Step 4:   Fill up the required information such as name, address etc.
  • Step 5:   Submit your photograph and ID proof along with the lost PAN card application form.
  • Step 6:   This can be provided online or couriered offline to NSDL
  • Step 7:   Make a payment of Rs. 107 (for Indian citizens) or Rs. 989 (for NRIs) through debit/ credit card or net banking
  • Step 8:   Once the payment has been made, an acknowledgement number will be generated which can be used to track the PAN card later.
  • Step 9:   A duplicate PAN card will be delivered to the address you have mentioned, in around two weeks
