How to apply for a duplicate PAN card if you have lost the original PAN card?


What is PAN card?

The Permanent Account Number card or PAN card is a vital document to identify taxpayers in the country. The PAN is a computer-based unique identification number assigned to individuals, HUFs, companies and trusts who pay taxes. You will need the PAN to pay your taxes, claim a tax refund, open a bank account, buy and sell mutual funds, make investments, buy or sell property etc. You PAN card is a valid proof of identity.

When should you apply for a duplicate PAN card?

You can apply for a duplicate if your PAN card gets lost, misplaced, stolen, damaged, or when your current PAN card has any errors that need to be rectified. The first thing to do if you lose your PAN card is to report it to the police to safeguard yourself from the misuse of the stolen document.

The process for a duplicate PAN card is simpler if you remember your existing PAN card number. If you don’t, visit https://www.incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in/home website and go to the page ‘Know your PAN’. By entering the required details, you will receive the number of the PAN card.

HOW TO GET A DUPLICATE PAN CARD

  • Step 1:   Visit the link https://tin.tin.nsdl.com/pan/correctiondsc.html to initiate the process.
  • Step 2:   Read the instructions carefully and scroll to the bottom of the page and select the correct option (individual, HUF, company,
                  trust etc) from the drop-down menu under Apply for Changes Or Correction in PAN Data (for DSC users).
  • Step 3:   A new page appears titled “Request For New PAN Card Or/ And Changes Or Correction in PAN Data.”
  • Step 4:   If you want to make any changes in the PAN card details, fill all the mandatory fields marked with asterisk and check the
                  corresponding boxes on the left-hand margin.
  • Step 5:   If you want a duplicate PAN card without any changes, fill up all the details in the form but do not tick on any box given on the left
                  margin.
  • Step 6:   You will have to pay a processing fee of Rs.110 if your communication address is in India, Rs 1020 if it is outside India. You can
                  pay by credit card or debit card, online banking or a demand draft payable in Mumbai to NSDL. If you are paying by credit or debit
                  card or online banking, enter the details in the form.
  • Step 7:   After you have filled up all the relevant details, click submit. If you have a digital signature (DSC), you can complete the process in
                  a paperless way. Check the DSC option, and select self. Upload your photo, your digital signature and all the required documents.
  • Step 8:   If there are no errors in your application, you will receive a 15-digit acknowledgement number and your filled-up application form.
                  (If you supplied a digital signature, you can ignore the rest of the steps. Just use the 15-digit acknowledgement number to track
                  status of your application.)
  • Step 9:   Save, print and sign the form.
  • Step 10: Affix two recent color photographs in the space provided (do not staple or clip it). Sign across the photographs.
  • Step 11: You must then mail it to the National Securities Depository Limited (NSDL) Office at Income Tax PAN Services Unit, NSDL
                  e-Governance Infrastructure Limited, 5th Floor, Mantri Sterling, Plot No. 341, Survey No. 997/8, Model Colony, Near Deep
                  Bungalow Chowk, Pune – 411016. Atach a demand draft (if you didn’t make the payment online) and the required documents.
  • Step 12: Once the documents are verified, a duplicate PAN card will be dispatched to the address mentioned in the form within 2 weeks.

Documents required for duplicate PAN card

You must furnish all the necessary documents required for duplicate PAN card like proof of identity, address and age for your duplicate PAN card application. In addition to these, you must submit proof of an existing PAN card.

Proof of PAN card:

  • Copy of PAN card; or
  • Copy of the letter issued by the Income Tax Department informing about PAN allotment
  • A copy of FIR (stating loss of PAN card)

Proof of identity:

  • Aadhaar Card
  • Voter’s ID
  • Driver’s license
  • Passport
  • Ration card with photograph
  • Photo ID issued by the Central Government or State Government or PSU
  • Pensioner card with photograph
  • Central Government Health Service Scheme Card or Ex-Servicemen Contributory Health Scheme photo card
  • Certificate of identity signed by a MP, MLA, municipal councillor or a Gazetted officer
  • Bank certificate on letter head from the branch (along with name and stamp of the issuing officer) containing duly attested photograph and bank account number of the applicant

Proof of address:

  • Aadhaar Card
  • Voter’s ID

  • Passport
  • Spouse’s passport
  • Post-office passbook with address
  • Domicile certificate
  • Property tax assessment order
  • Property registration document
  • Government residence allotment letter
  • Copy of electricity, phone, water or gas bill
  • Bank account, depository account or credit card statement
  • Employer certificate
  • Certificate of address signed by a MP, MLA, municipal councillor or a Gazetted officer

Proof of age:

  • Aadhaar Card
  • Voter’s ID
  • Driver’s license
  • Passport
  • Matriculation mark sheet
  • Birth certificate
  • Photo ID issued by the Central Government or State Government or PSU
  • Pensioner card with photograph
  • Central Government Health Service Scheme Card or Ex-Servicemen Contributory Health Scheme photo card
  • Domicile certificate
  • Marriage certificate
  • Sworn affidavit

Points to remember while applying for duplicate PAN card:

  • Your acknowledgement slip, documents, demand draft, should reach the NSDL office within 15 days of filing the online application.
  • If you have requested for reissue of PAN without any changes, the address for communication will be updated in the Income Tax database using the address for communication provided in the application.
