SJVN Company background
SJVN Limited was incorporated on May 24, 1988, as a joint venture of the Government of India and the Government of Himachal Pradesh. Its registered office is in Shimla, Himachal Pradesh. The company is listed on both the National Stock Exchange (SJVN) and the Bombay Stock Exchange (533206). SJVN is primarily engaged in hydroelectric power generation, but has diversified into thermal power, solar, wind, and power transmission. It is one of India’s key public sector enterprises in the energy sector.
SJVN Business Segments and Revenue Model
SJVN operates through segments such as hydropower, wind power, solar projects, and thermal power. Its flagship plant is the 1,500 MW Nathpa Jhakri Hydro Power Station, India’s largest hydropower project. The company also operates smaller hydropower stations, grid-connected solar and wind projects, and transmission lines. Revenue is generated mainly from the sale of electricity to state utilities and distribution companies under long-term power purchase agreements. Additional income arises from consultancy services and project development in renewable and conventional energy. Expansion into solar parks and interstate transmission systems supports diversification.

- 1988: Incorporated as Nathpa Jhakri Power Corporation to develop India’s largest hydropower project.
- 2002: Renamed as Satluj Jal Vidyut Nigam Limited (SJVN).
- 2004: Nathpa Jhakri Hydroelectric Station commissioned with a capacity of 1,500 MW.
- 2008: Granted Mini Ratna Category-I status.
- 2010: Listed on BSE and NSE through an IPO by the Government of India.
- 2015–2018: Expansion into renewable energy with commissioning of wind and solar power projects.
- 2019: Ventured into power transmission by winning interstate transmission system projects.
- 2022–2024: Secured large solar project bids under SECI and state schemes, strengthening renewable portfolio; also elevated to Navratna status in 2024.
- Present: Actively working on achieving 25,000 MW installed capacity by 2030, including hydro, solar, wind, and thermal projects.
