    Avantel Company background

    Founded in: 1990
    Managing director: A Vidyasagar

Avantel Ltd., formerly known as Avantel Softech Ltd., is a prominent player in the field of wireless communications, satellite technology, and embedded systems. The company was incorporated on May 30, 1990, and has since grown into a significant entity in India's technological landscape. Originally known for its focus on wireless communication components, Avantel has diversified into various sectors of the communication industry, including network management, software development, signal processing, and customer support services. With an in-house research and development (R&D) facility based in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, Avantel has continuously pushed the envelope in designing and developing cutting-edge technology solutions.

Avantel began as a company focused on designing and manufacturing components for the wireless industry. Founded by technocrat entrepreneurs, the company initially focused on producing components for the rapidly expanding wireless communication sector. Avantel quickly established itself as a leader in producing RF (Radio Frequency) and Microwave subsystems, catering to Defense laboratories and public sector undertakings (PSUs). This early success allowed the company to grow rapidly and gain a foothold in the highly competitive wireless communication space.

In the mid-1990s, Avantel ventured into the development of Multi-Access Rural Radio (MARR) systems for the Department of Telecommunications (DOT). This was a critical development, as MARR systems were designed to provide telecommunication services to rural and remote areas, an initiative that was in line with the government’s objective to improve communication infrastructure in underserved regions.

A significant milestone in Avantel's journey came with the development of an Insat-based C-band Mobile Satellite Services (MSS) reporting terminal. This hand-held device, developed with technology from the Space Applications Centre in Ahmedabad, was the first of its kind in India. It allowed users to transfer information from remote locations, a revolutionary concept at the time. Avantel's success in this area underscored its capacity for innovation and solidified its reputation as a leader in the satellite communication space.

As Avantel continued to grow, the company expanded its offerings to include wireless systems such as power amplifiers, wireline couplers, cavity diplexers, and other subsystems for microwave and satellite communication (SATCOM). These advancements helped Avantel cater to the burgeoning needs of the wireless communication industry and solidified its position as a reliable supplier of sophisticated technological solutions.

Alongside its work in the hardware sector, Avantel also diversified into software development. The company began working on network management software for HDSL (High-Speed Digital Subscriber Line) equipment, a critical technology for broadband communication. In addition, Avantel made strides in developing embedded software for real-time applications across a variety of platforms. This allowed the company to offer end-to-end solutions in the wireless communication sector, from hardware components to sophisticated software applications.

Avantel also developed a comprehensive Management Information System (MIS) package for its internal needs. The success of this package prompted the company to offer it to small and medium enterprises (SMEs) as an integrated ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) solution. This software division eventually positioned Avantel as a provider of enterprise-wide connectivity solutions, offering services such as LAN (Local Area Network), VAN (Value Added Network), and internet technologies to clients across various industries.

In 1999-2000, Avantel marked a significant achievement in the RF/Microwave segment by successfully developing and delivering niche import-substitute products, which were also exported to international markets. The company was the only vendor capable of executing Department of Telecommunications (DOT) orders for HDSL PairGain Systems, solidifying its leadership position in the sector.

To further enhance its global footprint, Avantel incorporated a wholly owned subsidiary in Boston, USA, under the name of Avantel Softech Inc. This move was designed to focus on software development, particularly in the growing fields of e-commerce and e-business. Avantel’s decision to expand internationally demonstrated its vision of becoming a key player in the global technology and solutions market, offering products and services that would cater to enterprise customers worldwide.

Avantel's diversified portfolio continued to grow as the company executed orders worth Rs. 8.6 crores for HDSL from Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd. (BSNL), a state-owned telecommunications company. The company also acquired 1196 square yards of land near Hyderabad's Hi-Tech City at Madhapur, a prime location that would house its future expansion plans.

In line with its growth strategy, Avantel established a new development center in Hyderabad during FY 2001-2002. The facility was equipped with 60 workstations and various advanced servers, including NT servers and Linux servers for application development. The center focused on software development for enterprise-level applications, including multimedia software and Rational Enterprise Studio.

The company also made significant investments in testing and assembling equipment, as well as in research and development. These investments allowed Avantel to remain at the forefront of technological advancements and continue developing products that meet the evolving needs of the communications and technology industries.

As Avantel continued to develop and innovate, it became a key player in the satellite communication and defense sectors. During the years FY 2012-2013, Avantel developed a range of satellite-based voice and data communication terminals for the Indian Defense Services. The company supplied ship-borne integrated data communication terminals for the Indian Navy and Indian Coast Guard, helping to modernize India’s defense communication infrastructure. Additionally, Avantel developed and supplied MSS terminals for the Indian Navy’s aircraft, further reinforcing its strong relationship with defense agencies.

Avantel also contributed to projects that involved the development of AIS transponders (Automatic Identification Systems), RTIS (Real-Time Information Systems) for satellite migration, and a 30 MHz transmit and receive system for ISRO (Indian Space Research Organisation) and NARL (National Remote Sensing Centre). These projects demonstrated Avantel’s capabilities in creating advanced technologies that cater to the needs of both the defense and space sectors.

With a strong foundation in satellite communication, wireless systems, embedded software, and enterprise solutions, Avantel Ltd. is well-positioned to capitalize on future growth opportunities. The company’s diversified product offerings and strong R&D capabilities are expected to fuel its continued success in both domestic and international markets. As Avantel continues to expand its presence globally, it remains a company to watch in the technology sector, especially as it continues to innovate and develop solutions for the wireless, satellite, and embedded systems markets.

For investors, the Avantel share price has been a subject of interest, reflecting the company’s growth potential and the market’s confidence in its long-term prospects. As Avantel continues to expand its product offerings and improve its technological capabilities, the company is likely to remain a key player in the communications and technology industries, making it a company to keep an eye on in the stock market.

Avantel Ltd.’s journey from a small communication component manufacturer to a leading player in wireless, satellite, and embedded systems showcases the company’s commitment to innovation and technological advancement. With a strong focus on R&D, strategic partnerships, and an expanding global footprint, Avantel is well-positioned for continued growth. As the company moves forward, its diversified portfolio, strong market presence, and continued investment in research and development are expected to contribute to its ongoing success, making it a significant player in the technology sector.
